What is AMR?

Automatic Meter Reading (AMR) is the 2 way communication method for collection of consumption data from customers' utility meters using telephony, radio frequency, power-line and satellite communications technologies.

AMR provides water, gas and electric utility-service companies the opportunity to increase operational efficiency, improve customer service, reduce data-collection costs and quickly gather critical information that provides insight to company decision-makers.

AMR brings significant benefits to the customer by providing increased meter-reading accuracy, fewer estimated bills, rapid response to read requests, automatic leak detection and billing options. The technology also improves resource-management abilities by detecting system losses on a demand-zone basis and providing detailed usage information about individual sites, which allows the utility to offer variable rates and encourage price-responsive behavior among customers.

AMR improves operational management by providing just-in-time meter replacement, tamper detection, remote access, and automatic scheduling of meter reading. In short, AMR will optimize cost savings and maximize efficiency for Anglian Utility's Meters (Electrical, Water and Gas) while providing improved customer service.

To day the most successful technological breakthrough used in PLC systems is the implementation of the SPREAD SPECTRUM CARRIER technology that was initially studied and developed by the US military between years 1980 – 1985. Based on these earlier studies, DMC International carried out several modifications and improvements on the technology that allowed them to design and develop their own AMR system via PLC networks. Today, DMC is considered a pioneer in the meter reading industry and a superior manufacturer of PLC systems worldwide.

In an AMR system, there are a large number of meters and concentrators located in a residential, a commercial or an industrial area with a complicated topographic distribution. None of the communication media available today (such as leased lines, microwave, fiber optical, VHF/UHF radio or trunking system, etc.) can meet the demand well. Actually, it is costly and impractical to set up an extra communication network to connect each household with the concentrator. How to use the existed power lines, therefore, becomes a determining factor in a successful AMR system.

Why PLC is considered the best communication media for AMR?
AMR benefits to the utilitiy provider's and their customers
Benefits of AMR to the utilitiy provider's customers:

Accurate billing statements and improved service
• Reduction in estimated readings and billings
• Improvement in meter reading accuracy through the reduction of errors from manual readings
• Improved security because the meter readers no longer need to gain access to the property
• Allows customers to move easily between different rates creating greater choices
• More analyzing and reports for power consumptions and power factor.
• Controlling the legal and illegal leakages in power line.
• Improved access and information on energy consumption

Benefits of AMR to utilitiy providers include:

• Reduced meter reading costs
• Saving meter readers, accountants, billing cost and indirect cost
• Ability to access difficult-to-read meters
• Improved customer service
• Reduced percentage of estimated bills
• Improved meter reader safety
• Implementation of real-time pricing
• Reduced read-to-bill time
• Distribution automation
• Improved fraud detection
• Solving Bad Debit Problems
